The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are civil rights laws prohibiting discrimination solely on the basis of a disability. Section 504 states that any entities who receive federal financial funds are not allowed to discriminate against individuals with disabilities. Postsecondary students are covered specifically by Section 504 at colleges that receive federal financial funds. However, services in college may not be what the high school offered. Coverage is different according to the law.

Academic Accommodations
Accessibility resources staff in the Academic Support Center are dedicated to providing equal access to the College鈥檚 curriculum, academic programs, academic services, and academic facilities. We partner with students to empower ongoing development, teach strategies for academic success, educate the campus community about disability as diversity, and encourage a welcoming climate.
Academic accommodations are adjustments to courses, programs, and services that provide equal access and improve a student鈥檚 ability to fully engage in the college experience.
- Academic accommodations cannot fundamentally alter the requirements of the college鈥檚 standards, course, or program requirements.
- Academic accommodations cannot lower the standards of a course or modify the content or rigor of a course.
- Academic accommodations are not retroactive.
Examples of possible academic accommodations are listed below but is not an exhaustive list of accommodations. Academic accommodations are determined through our interactive process detailed below.
- Testing accommodations
- Materials in alternative format
- Advanced copies of notes and slides
- Note-taking accommodations
- Assistive technologies
- Attendance accommodations
- Assignment accommodations
- Speech accommodations
- ASL interpreter
The first step in requesting academic accommodations is to make an appointment with the accessibility resources staff. Each student鈥檚 situation is unique and is handled on a case-by-case basis through the interactive process. Documentation is not needed to start the academic accommodation process.
Beginning in mid-August, students can make an and choose Schedule an Appointment where you will be prompted to log in using your 麻豆视频 credentials. In the Appointment Availability drop-down menu, choose Initial Accessibility Resources. If this is your first visit to the Academic Support Center, you may need to first select 鈥淩egister with the ASC鈥 to be added to our system.
Who is eligible for an accommodation?

- Learning disabilities
- Mental health conditions

Initial Appointment - Interactive Process
The initial appointment with the accessibility resources staff will be a time to engage in the interactive process. The interactive process is a structured interview with each student to assess the impact of their disability on their academics and create individualized academic accommodations. Documentation that describes the impact of the disability will often aid the student and staff in this process. Students can return for another appointment at any time to review their academic accommodations, explore any additional accommodations, and discuss any challenges they are experiencing with their accommodations.
The goal of the initial appointment is to:
- Discuss with accessibility resources staff the impacts of your disability on your academics and establish reasonable academic accommodations to give equal access to your courses.
- Create an accommodation letter with the student鈥檚 academic accommodations that will be shared by the student with their professors.
- Educate the student on how to share their academic accommodations with their professors.
The student is the best source of information about the impacts of their disability on their academics. Documentation that describes the impact of the disability will often aid the student and staff in this process. Documentation is not needed to start the academic accommodation process.
- Presenting documentation as soon as possible in the process is beneficial to both the student and accessibility resources staff.
- Staff will work with the student to determine what documentation is needed and can request records by having the student fill out a release of information form.
- If a student鈥檚 disability is apparent, additional documentation may not be necessary.
- Accessibility resources staff may request additional information to substantiate a disability.听
The Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) has states that documentation may come in many forms. Documentation from external sources may include:
- Educational records: Accommodation history, reports, assessments, and evaluations created by school psychologists, teachers, or the educational system.
- Medical records: Records attesting to a disabling condition used for the purposes of documentation need to be on identifying letterhead and signed by a qualifying provider.
Documentation may be submitted to the Academic Support Center by any of the following means:

Testing Accommodation Requests and Process
The Academic Support Center provides three private, camera-recorded testing rooms to accommodate students with disabilities. These rooms are prioritized for students who have private testing and need assistive technology, scribing, audio, or other specific accommodations. Dependent on availability, these testing rooms may be utilized if faculty are not able to find space for accommodated testing (typically reduced-distraction) within their department; please remember that the first choice for accommodated testing should be within the academic department. A testing room can be requested as soon as the exam date is known and at least three business days in advance. The process is initiated by a student completing the request form. Faculty must then review the request and complete their portion of the form. The form is then sent to the ASC who will then finalize the exam date and time. The process and testing policies and procedures are outlined below.

Housing Accommodations
The Office of Residential Life manages requests related to living on campus. This includes requests related to rooms and dietary concerns, the need for an air conditioner, and requests for an emotional support animal.
Dietary Requests
Students with a disability in need of a dining accommodation should submit and complete the form below, with any accompanying documentation.
Dining Services is able to accommodate a wide variety of dietary needs. We have a campus dietitian who can meet with you to discuss your individualized dietary needs and offerings available through Dining Services. Meeting with the dietitian is no cost to the student. To schedule a visit, call the Health Service Office at (507) 933-7630.
Mental Health Accommodation Requests
The Counseling Center can help students seek academic and housing accommodations on the basis of mental health concerns.
If you are seeking accommodations for a mental health and are not currently a client of the Counseling Center, call or stop in our office to schedule an appointment to meet with one of our therapists to discuss accommodations. Call us at (507) 933-7027 or stop in our office in JSU 204. If you already work with one of our therapists, feel free to ask them about accommodations on campus.
Academic and Housing Accommodation Documentation
The 麻豆视频 Counseling Center can provide documentation for current clients to the Accessibility Resources in the Academic Support Center for academic accommodations. We are also willing to provide documentation to Residential Life for housing accommodations.
- The content of this documentation is up to the individual practitioner as is the decision to provide it.
- It is expected that you are a known client to your therapist, having met with them long enough that they can make a diagnosis and assess if accommodations are appropriate.
- If you are a new client and needing immediate documentation it will be suggested that you request this from prior medical or mental health care providers.
Medical or Dietary Accommodations
Students seeking non-mental health related medical accommodations or accommodations regarding dietary needs should connect with their medical provider.
We do not provide 鈥渆xcuse letters鈥 for missed classes or for missed academic work, though in rare cases we may advocate for a client in an academic setting. We partner with the Dean of Students Office to support students if an extended absence becomes necessary to manage mental health care needs. Follow this link for information on a Medical Leave of Absence.
Recent research has highlighted the mental and emotional benefits of interacting with domestic animals. Because of the increased awareness around this topic, it has become more common for those with mental, emotional, and/or psychiatric disabilities to ask their mental health providers to 鈥減rescribe鈥 (write supporting documentation for) an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) in order to be allowed to have a pet in a living situation such as a residence hall or apartment that might otherwise prohibit them.
While the providers in the Counseling Center at 麻豆视频 recognize the benefits that ESAs provide, we want students to know that we do not provide diagnosis, official assessment, or supporting documentation for such accommodations in our center. We are happy to talk with students to generate ideas for resources in the community that might offer this type of assessment and documentation for the purposes of accommodations.
Medical Accommodation Requests
麻豆视频 Health Service can provide accommodation documentation for students who are receiving active, ongoing treatment. It is expected that the patient is well known to the medical provider in Health Service, having met with them enough to know the patient is following recommended treatment plans and appropriate follow up.
Accommodation documentation can only be recommended as an essential part of a treatment plan designed to address a disability associated with diagnosed medical or psychiatric condition and is always based on the provider鈥檚 clinical judgement. 麻豆视频 Health Service is not able to provide documentation for new patients.
If you are seeking accommodation documentation please schedule an appointment with your 麻豆视频 Health Service provider. Please bring all necessary paperwork to your scheduled appointment. A Release of Information will be needed from the office requesting the documentation prior to any information being provided.
Gender Identity and Pronouns
麻豆视频 recognizes that some students use names other than their legal names to identify themselves. As long as the use of this different name is not for the purposes of misrepresentation, avoidance of legal obligation, or use of a derogatory term, the College will make every effort to welcome, include, and support 麻豆视频 students in establishing and maintaining their self-declared identities within the College community. Privacy Law
Accessibility resources staff in the Academic Support Center at 麻豆视频 ensures that information regarding students with a disability is maintained in a confidential manner as required or permitted by law. Information on students includes: disability documentation, test data, appointment notes, and academic notifications. Disability documentation is used to determine appropriate accommodations and establish protection under the law. Information about the impact of the student鈥檚 disability is shared with appropriate faculty or other campus personnel as allowed by the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). Accessibility resources staff will release information regarding a student鈥檚 disability if there is legitimate need to know. - Disability files including disability documentation are stored in files and software that are accessible to Academic Support Center staff only. Accessibility resources records are not accessible to faculty or other personnel.
- Disability status is not noted on or transferred to other academic records. It only appears on records housed in the Academic Support Center on our software.
- Student files in accessibility resources are kept for 7 years after the student is no longer registered for classes or graduates. After this time, the file is destroyed.
- The student has the right to access their file and can arrange to do so with an accessibility resources staff member present. All information in the file is property of the Academic Support Center.
- Accessibility resources staff does not automatically notify professors if a student makes contact with the Academic Support Center. It is the student鈥檚 responsibility to notify professors that the student is registered with accessibility resources and needs accommodations.
