Discover Opportunities with Philosophy

Research

The emphasis on research within the philosophy major is a valuable opportunity to engage in independent inquiry, improve your writing and communication abilities, and develop essential research, critical thinking, and analytic skills. Working closely with faculty mentors, you will formulate research questions, gather and analyze relevant sources, and critically evaluate arguments. This experience fosters intellectual curiosity and encourages original thinking.

Philosophical Discussions, Events and Organizations

The philosophy department organizes and supports discussions, guest lectures, and events that facilitate intellectual exploration and dialogue. These events create a vibrant community of learners where you can engage in thought-provoking conversations and exchange ideas. Plus, there is time for fun such as the annual kick-ball game with the Greek, Latin, and classical studies department and a reception on Honors Day for students and families.

Philosophy majors are eligible for free membership in the American Philosophical Association, the professional organization for academic philosophers.

Professional Development

The philosophy faculty recognizes the importance of professional development and works with the Center for Career Development to provide a range of resources and opportunities for you to gain valuable experience that aligns with your interests and career goals. Additionally there are professional development resources including newsletters and professional organizations and journals, professional conferences, and essay writing contests for you to grow career-related connections.
