There Are Many Ways to Pay For College

It is the family鈥檚 responsibility to pay for the student鈥檚 education. Aid is anything used to help you pay the costs, including loans. Students will receive same aid every year as long as Satisfactory Academic Progress is met.

Scholarships

麻豆视频 offers both merit-based and need-based scholarship assistance.

  • Merit-based scholarships do not require a student to demonstrate financial eligibility and must be awarded during the Admission process. They also may be awarded as part of a need-based financial aid package. To be renewed the student needs to maintain the established minimum standards.
  • Need-based scholarships are offered to students who demonstrate financial eligibility by filing the FAFSA. The offered amounts will vary from year to year and are determined based on your family's Estimated Family Contribution (SAI) as determined by FAFSA and availability of funds.

Returning students must be making "Satisfactory Academic Progress" to retain eligibility of all financial aid.

View the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.

Merit scholarships are awarded at the time of admission based on academic achievement (official unweighted high school GPA), talent, or other criteria established by the College.

  • These scholarships are given to full-time, first-year students based on their application for admission.
  • Once awarded, a student's merit scholarship will remain the same for up to four years (or eight semesters) of continuous full-time enrollment, provided they meet the required academic standards and remain in good standing with the College as defined by our Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.

麻豆视频 provides over $54 million annually in merit scholarships and need based grants to students. We are able to provide this level of assistance because of the generous contributions made by our generous friends and alumni.

  • If a student is selected to be a recipient of a named scholarship, 麻豆视频 grant amounts may be replaced with the amount of the donor funded scholarship.
  • In its place, the named fund would be listed on the award.
  • These scholarships may be renewed as part of the annual financial aid process based on annually completing the FAFSA.

Established scholarship funds awarded by a student's home religious and faith community--regardless of religion--will be matched by 麻豆视频 up to $1,000 annually.

  • Notification from the community indicating the dollar amount or the likelihood of a future award must be received by June 15.
  • The Financial Aid Office must receive funds from the church by September 1.
  • Current 麻豆视频 students should apply for the Church Matching Scholarship by having your church complete the .

Scholarship information for new students

Grants

麻豆视频 offers grants to students who demonstrate financial eligibility by filing the FAFSA. These grants include: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), Minnesota State Grant, Minnesota Student Teacher Grants, Minnesota Fostering Independence Higher Education Grant and the 麻豆视频 Tuition Grant. They do not need to be repaid. Grants are made to students who demonstrate financial eligibility based on information provided on the FAFSA.

Federal Pell Grant

  • The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students and certain post-baccalaureate students to promote access to postsecondary education. Pell grants are awarded based on an annual Pell chart/table released by the Department of Education. Generally, Pell grants are based on a student鈥檚 EFC, enrollment status and the COA of the school at which they are attending. Amounts are determined by the annual Pell chart/table. Recipients are chosen according to a standardized federal formula that determines eligibility based on information provided on the FASFA.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

  • The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is awarded to undergraduate Pell eligible students that are enrolled at least half-time and demonstrate exceptional financial need. Exceptional need is determined by the student鈥檚 EFC. Under normal processing and consideration students with a $0 EFC are awarded first. If funds are available after all eligible $0 EFC students are awarded, or extenuating situations arise, Pell eligible students with a higher EFC could be considered. 麻豆视频 selects the recipients of this federal funding based on the information provided on the FAFSA. Maximum award is $500 and is dependent on available federal funding for the academic year.

Federal TEACH Grant

  • Federal TEACH Grant provides up to $4,000 per year to students who are willing to commit to teach full time in a high-need field at a low income school. If you do not complete the four-year teaching obligation, this grant will convert to an unsubsidized direct federal loan. Due to the required federal sequester reductions, the TEACH amount will be reduced according to federal requirements.

Minnesota State Grant

  • Minnesota State Grant is awarded to Minnesota residents who graduate from a Minnesota high school and who demonstrates financial need. Recipients must complete the FAFSA to be considered for state grant money, be enrolled as a full-time student, and register for a minimum of 3.75 courses per semester to receive full funding. Your FAFSA must be filed no later than October 1 in order to receive full state grant funding in addition to meeting the enrollment requirements.

Minnesota Student Teacher Grants

  • The Minnesota Student Teacher Grants provides postsecondary financial assistance to eligible students enrolled in Minnesota teacher preparation programs during one term in which the student is completing a required 12-week or more student teaching experience. This program is based on a funds available basis, selected undergraduate and graduate students may receive awards of up to $7,500 for one term. There are two grants available based on eligibility:
  •
    • The Minnesota Student Teachers in Shortage Areas Grant (Formerly Teacher Candidate Grant) provides postsecondary financial assistance to eligible students who intend to teach in a license shortage area or rural school district after graduating and receiving their teaching license.
    • The Minnesota Underrepresented Student Teacher Grant provides postsecondary financial assistance to eligible students who belong to a racial or ethnic group underrepresented in the Minnesota teacher workforce.
  • A student must submit a complete application to the Minnesota Office of Higher Education for the term in which the student is completing a required 12-week or more student teaching experience.

Minnesota Fostering Independence Higher Education Grant

  • The Fostering Independence Higher Education Grants is a financial aid program that seeks to eliminate that barrier for Minnesota students who were in the foster care system. If you are a Minnesota resident under age 27 and were in the Minnesota foster care system at any point after your thirteenth birthday, this grant may cover the cost of attendance at any eligible Minnesota public or participating private college and university. Accessing the grant is as simple as filling out either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Minnesota Dream Act application. Both applications include a question about foster care; the Minnesota Department of Human Services will confirm your information. If you are eligible, your postsecondary institution will award the grant as part of your financial aid package.

麻豆视频 Tuition Grants are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. Tuition Grants will be renewed each year. The FAFSA must be completed each year for renewal. The Grant may change if your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA changes from year to year. The most common factors impacting a change in EFC are a change in number of family members enrolled in college and a change in family income.

  • 麻豆视频 financial aid awards are made possible, in part, by generous 麻豆视频 alumni and friends who have established scholarships to support students like you. 麻豆视频 may replace your aid with awards funded from endowed or donor-designated scholarships. This reclassification aligns with the intent of donors and allows the College to optimize financial resources while preserving the student鈥檚 total financial aid award.

Loans

Loans are money that students and families borrow that needs to be repaid. You are encouraged to borrow only what you need. The Financial Aid Office works closely with you to achieve this goal. There are two ways loans can help cover your college expenses: You can receive need-based federal loans as a part of your financial aid package and/or you can apply for non-need-based loans to cover your family's contribution to your education.

The Federal Government provides loan funds to students that can be utilized to help finance higher education. Students must complete the FAFSA in order to be eligible for federal student loans. These loans are part of the financial aid award but must be repaid after school and will include an additional amount from added interest.

Effective JULY 15th, 2025, students planning on using their Federal Direct Loans will need to perform the following steps:

  1. In the student鈥檚 account, navigate to Financial Aid-My Awards page and choose 鈥楢ccept鈥 for the Direct Loan awards the student desires to use (subsidized and/or unsubsidized).
  2. First time borrowers must also complete the Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note with the Dept of Education. Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note steps can be completed by visiting www.studentaid.gov and logging in using the student FSA ID and password.

    1.

Students planning on NOT using their Federal Direct Loans can either take no action or perform step 1 above and choose 鈥淒ecline鈥 for the Direct Loan awards that the student desires to not use.

Once the student has completed all steps successfully, the Financial Aid office will apply the funding to the student's account. Federal Regulations dictate that funds cannot be applied to the student鈥檚 account any sooner than ten (10) days prior to the start of each term and that half of the accepted loan amount be applied to each the fall and spring semester.

Alternative/Private Lenders provide loan funds to students that can be utilized to help finance higher education. Alternative/Private Lender student loans are used to supplement the federal loan programs when federal aid, scholarships, and personal funding do not cover the cost of charged college expenses. These loans are not considered need-based loans and often (while not always) require a credit worthy co-signer. Private Loans are not guaranteed by the Federal Government and are not awarded as part of a student's initial financial aid package. Students may borrow an alternative/private lender loan through various participants such as banks or credit unions to help cover college expenses. 麻豆视频 recommends that students consider exhausting their eligibility in the Student Federal Direct Loan program before borrowing through a private student loan program.

Processing Tips for Private Lender Loans:

  • Processing time will take from 20 to 30 days from application to disbursement due to truth in lending regulations.
  • Loans are disbursed half in each semester.
  • Plan your annual financial needs and complete the loan process by August 1.

Frequently Asked Questions About Student Loans

Most federal and state loans have a grace period that allows you to wait six (6) months after graduation before you begin repayment. Private loans vary, with some requiring payment during school and others waiting until after graduation. There are also deferment and forbearance plans, which can delay your repayment under certain circumstances, such as going back to school or becoming unemployed.

Absolutely! Once you have been identified as being eligible to receive federal loans, you will need to complete the loan entrance counseling and you must sign an MPN. The MPN is a legal agreement to the terms and conditions of the loan, including repayment. You can electronically sign the MPN for Direct Stafford Loans at.

No, however if a parent chooses to borrow funds through the Federal Parent PLUS loan program, then he or she is responsible to make payments on the loan.

Not immediately. If you take a semester off, it should not make much of a difference for your federal loans. Most federal loans have a six (6) month grace period. When you return to school at least half-time after taking a semester off, the grace period on your loans will reset, provided you did not exceed it. It is possible to request an extension to the grace period, but this must be done before the grace period is used up.

If your grace period has run out in the middle of your leave of absence, you will have to start making payments on your student loans.
