Summer Student Research EmploymentStudent and Supervisor Resources
The following pertains to summer student researchers paid from external grants, internal grants, and endowed or departmental funds.
2025 Student Hourly Rate:
The hourly student research rate has been adjusted to $15.50/hr. for 2025. This base rate should be used for all Summer Research Employment and Supervisor Agreements.
*Summer wages are taxable income.
When calculating your summer research budget, remember that fringe benefits will be charged to the account from which a student is paid. The fringe benefit rate is approximately 8.28%.
Employment:
Forms are due by Friday, April 18th, 2025 to Sarah Peterson, RSP (speterson@gustavus.edu)
1. Required: 2025 Student Research Summer Agreement
2. If a student has not been previously employed by Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ the following forms are required and can be found below:
a. Student Direct Deposit Authorization
b. I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification)
d. 2025 Federal W-4 (Employee's Withholding Certificate)
e. MN W-4 (Minnesota Employee Withholding Allowance/Exemption Certificate)
Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training:
Students working on summer research projects that are externally funded by a government source (federal, state, or local) must complete Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training.
• Students must complete the online CITI training before attending the in-person or virtual RCR training.
• A virtual RCR training will be held on: Tuesday, May 6th, from 10:30 -11:30 am (
• An In-Person RCR Training makeup session will be offered in Nobel Hall on TBD.

Required Lab Safety Training:
All laboratory users should complete the online laboratory safety course annually before working in labs. Below are the instructions to sign in and complete the course. Please let your supervisor know if there are any difficulties with the links. We are now using the CITI Program Lab Safety courses, which are specifically selected based on the learner group you're in (students, faculty/staff).

2) Log in, or register. When you register, you first select Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ as your institution, then follow the remaining prompts. Please note that Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ no longer uses SSO with this website. So new users to this system will need to register an account and select Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ as their institution during the registration process to see the relevant training courses.
3) Click on the "My Courses" tab in the upper right-hand side of the page.
4) On the new page that opens, find Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ and click on "View Courses."
5) Scroll to the bottom of the page to a box labeled "Learner Tools for Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ" and click "Add a Course"
6) For the Lab Safety courses, Answer Question 8 regarding your role as a student or faculty/staff.
7) For undergraduate students, the course you will be taking is: Lab Chemical Safety–Students. For faculty/staff, the course you will be taking is: Lab Chemical Safety–Faculty/Staff.
8) Your course should populate the list of courses you are required to take.

Summer Housing:
*Housing Application forms are due by April 18th.
1) If you have questions regarding summer housing, please email reslife@gustavus.edu or by phone at 507-933-7529
2) Please remind students they are responsible for paying their summer housing bills.
3) Students will not receive an additional stipend for housing.
4) Please note that student researchers will continue to pay for their housing throughout their summer research experience.
