Earthquakes

  • . The main source for current and historical earthquakes in the United States, though coverage of earthquakes is global.
  • . Shows locations of earthquakes globally over the last five years. Great resource for current earthquakes and you can link to see seismometers around the world.
  • . A website designed to teach the fundamentals of earthquakes and seismology. This is used in the Principles of Geology (GEO 111) class at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.

Graduate Schools in Geology

Most universities have graduate programs in geology. (Note that many programs have recently changed their name to Earth Science, or Earth and Environmental Science.) Here are a few that our recent graduates have attended, but there are dozens more to explore and choose from.

Professional Societies

Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

  • . This site contains abundant GIS data from around the world, although most available data are from the U.S.
  • . Site supported by the Minnesota DNR, digital elevation models can be downloaded for free.
  • . The national elevation dataset, large-scale digital elevation models can be retrieved here.

Geological Time

  • . A web-based program supported by the U of W that converts radiocarbon ages into calendar-year ages.

Topographic Maps

  • . This site is designed by a Stephen Reynolds (Arizona State University) and provides several practice exercises for interpreting topographic maps.

Plate Tectonics

Paleontology

  • . Fairly new website that serves as a ‘one-stop’ source for paleontology.
