Adding a printer via TCP/IP Port (Windows)

This article will show you how to add a printer that is not in the residence halls or a public lab.

If you want to install one of the printers in the Residence Halls, please see Residence hall printers. If you want to install printers for the other public labs, (like Romeo or Juliet in the Library) please see Academic printers.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start->Printers and Faxes (Windows XP). This is also in the control panel.
  2. Click Add a printer.
  3. Select Local printer attached to this computer (XP).
  4. Select Create a new port: and select Standard TCP/IP port from the pop down.
  5. Click Next.
    1. Windows XP will launch a wizard to add the TCP/IP Port.
    2. Click Next.
    3. Enter the hostname of the printer.
    4. If Windows is unable to find the printer, make sure it is on and that the hostname is correct.
    5. Click finish.
  6. Select the driver from the list or click Have Disk if the driver is not in the list. You can check \\winsoft\drivers or the manufacturer's website for the drivers.
  7. Enter a name for the printer.
  8. Do not share the printer.
  9. Print a test page to make sure it installed properly.

Windows Vista/7

  1. Click Start->Devices and Printers (Vista/7).
  2. Right click anywhere in the window and select Add Printer.
  3. Click Add Local Printer.
  4. Select Create new port.
  5. Then pick standard TCP/IP port from the list.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter the hostname or IP address of the printer in the hostname box.
    1. Make sure query the printer and automatically select the driver to use is selected.
  8. Click Next.
    1. If the driver is not found and this is a HP printer, select HP->Universal Print Driver.
    2. Windows will now attempt to figure out the driver. If it has the correct driver, it will pick it for you. If it doesn't you will need to point it to the correct driver. You may need to download it from the manufacturers website.
  9. Enter the name for the printer.
  10. Select Do not share this printer.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click Finish.
  13. Print a test page to make sure it is setup properly.
