An operating system (OS) is a computer program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer. A key component of system software, the OS performs basic tasks, such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing the processing of instructions, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing files.

How do I determine my operating system?

Depending on your operating system, there are several ways to determine what version you are on.

Microsoft Windows

  • Click on the Windows start button in the bottom right corner
  • Start typing System Information
  • Click on System Information from the list of results to open it.
  • Your Windows version will be listed under OS Name and Version
