Incoming mail server settings for [[PDA]]'s are handle very much like the incoming mail server settings on any computer.  Using imap.gac.edu and making sure to connect through SSL (which should change the port automatically) are key in this part of the set up.  Of course, when configuring T-mobile PDA's you may have to use a POP server to configure the incoming mail because with T-mobile the incoming and outgoing mail must be carried through the T-mobile server myemail.t-mobile.com.  Since most of the faculty use SprintPCS, it is more likely that you will be able to configure the PDA's incoming mail settings by the GAC server requirements.  Most of these settings are simply part of the main set up process when creating a [[VersaMail]] or Snappermail account.

Incoming mail

Incoming mail server settings for PDA's are very much like the incoming mail server settings on any computer. Most of these settings are simply part of the main set up process when creating a VersaMail or Snappermail account.

Outgoing mail

Before setting out to configure a PDA's outgoing mail server, it is important to find out which carrier you are working with. As Sprint is the most common one on campus, the directions below describe the Sprint server and how to acquire access to it. However, if their carrier is not Sprint, they will more than likely have to call their carrier's helpline and ask for the outgoing mail server name as well as a username and password. After assuring that the server name, username, and password are all accounted for the process of set up can begin.

SprintPCS CARRIER SMTP

1.You need to set an EMAIL password for your Sprint account:

  • Go to Sprint's web site at www.sprintpcs.com.
  • Log onto your "My PCS" using your SprintPCS phone and password. Unless you have changed it, your password is the last four digits of your social security number.
  • Click on "My Personal Information" located along the left side of the screen.
  • Under "Passwords", click the "Modify" link to the right of "PCS Vision User Name". This will display your SprintPCS email address, and give you the option to change it if you wish. Write this address down for future reference, as you will need this information to setup VersaMail on your handheld device. If you have made changes, click "Submit" to get back to the "My Personal Information" screen. If no changes were made, click "Cancel" to get back to the "My Personal Information" screen.
  • Click on the "Modify" link to the right of "PCS Vision Password", just under "PCS Vision User Name".
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to enter a new password. Note that you will need to have your phone on and in a coverage area for the password to be reset on your phone. Write down your new password for future reference, as you will need this information to setup VersaMail on your handheld device.

2.In your VersaMail Account settings under Server (Edit Accounts | Server), enter the following:

         SMTP Server: smtp.sprintpcs.com
         Username: [your Sprint username†]
Password: [your EMAIL password you set in step 1 above]

3.Sprint will refuse authentication unless your email address is the same as your SprintPCS Vision email address:

  • In your VersaMail Account settings under Identity (Edit Account | Identity), enter your SprintPCS email address, i.e. username@sprintpcs.com
  • If you want replies to go your normal email address, enter it in the "Reply To" area (Edit Account | Identity | Reply To).

† - Enter the portion of your SprintPCS Vision email address before the "@" here. So, if your address is myname@sprintpcs.com, your username would be myname. Some users have reported that entering only the username part does not work. If it does not work for you, please try entering your entire SprintPCS Vision email address.

Alternate information: Sprint complicates things by having three passwords - the account management password, the Vision password, and the e-mail password. This may help you: On the Sprint PCS web site, there is a 'Preferences' link by the compose msg function. Under the preferences, you can set up an e-mail password. THIS is the password that is assigned to the SMTP and POP servers in SnapperMail.

The password and username will be used as the ESMTP log-in, so it is important to make sure that in the "Advance" Mail Settings Menu, ESMTP is selected. Sometimes ESMTP is not actually found, and instead there is a check box next to the words "my server requires authentication".

Your e-mail address CAN be different than your username for the SprintPCS server, as long as both servers are configured properly and the PDA is new enough to have the option of separating incoming and outgoing server options. On many PDA's, it is simply easier to configure the servers as indicated above and then select the reply to address as the Gac.edu address.
