Remote Desktop is a way for a user to access their machine in a different location on a network.

Requirements

In order to set up remote desktop on your machine there are a few things that you need.

  1. Your machine that you will be connecting to must be running Windows XP Professional
  2. The computer you will use to connect to your computer must be running Windows 95 or later. You may need to install the remote desktop software on this computer.
  3. Your machine you want to access must be password protected

Settings

How to set up your computer in order to use remote desktop

  1. Locate My Computer either on your desktop or in your start menu.
  2. Right Click and go to Properties
  3. Go to the tab labeled Remote
  4. Under the remote assistant section check the box thats says Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.
  5. Click on the button that says Select Remote Users... and see if it says your account already has access (will say this over the add, remove buttons. If it doesn't select your account and click add. When all this is done, select OK
  6. Next look at what your computer name is (this is listed right below the step 4 check box) You will need this when your ready to connect remotely
  7. Click OK once the above steps have been taken

Accessing Your Computer

If accessing from a Windows XP machine Remote Desktop is already installed on any Windows XP machines

  1. Click on Windows start button
  2. Go to All Programs
  3. Go up to the top of that list to accessories
  4. Then go to Communications
  5. Then select Remote Desktop Connection

If accessing from a machine that is not running Windows XP

  1. to download Remote Desktop Connection for a Window based machine (Windows 95 or newer) or to download Remote Desktop for MAC OS X
  2. After install Continue with the steps below

Once Remote Desktop Screen Appears

  1. Type in your computers name (the one that you are trying to access)
  2. If you would like there are other options you can change if you click on Options Like Display Size and other Performance options.
  3. Next Click Connect
  4. At this point you will be prompted for your user name and password (remember these are the ones you use on the computer your trying to access)
  5. After typing in your user name and password click OK and it will then load up your computer remotely.
