Media development station documentation - This documentation is to aid in the use of machines and programs in the Culpeper Language Center's Media development station. This documentation is written for use by Culpeper student employees. Many of the processes described below should not be done without the supervision of or express permission from an employee of the Culpeper Language Center including the Culpeper Director.

If you have trouble using any of the machines, or they do not seem to be functioning as these directions suggest, please contact Alison Sommer, do not un-plug/re-do any of the machine connections without specific instructions to do so!! If Alison is unavailable, please contact Matt Dobosenski in Media Services for assistance.

Copying a PAL or NTSC VHS video to DVD

• Put the VHS into the Samsung (gold-colored) VCR
• Make sure the out-put type is NTSC
• Put a blank DVD into the Panasonic DVD tray, and wait until it recognizes the blank DVD.
• Hit the record button (the round red button) on the DVD player.
• Hit play on the the VCR.
• You should be able to watch the video's progress on the TV, if you have it switched to the correct input.
• When the movie is over, hit stop on the DVD player and VCR. Wait about 15 seconds while the DVD burner completes its process
• Hit the Settings button on the Panasonic remote. This should take you to a menu (displayed on the TV)
• Scroll down to the Settings menu and hit the select button.
• Choose Finalize disk and hit select
• Select yes/ok/continue to the next two questions it asks you. It will then finalize the disk. When it is done, it will tell you Finalization Complete - Disk is now available only for playback, hit the select button. You may now eject the DVD.

Making a Copy of a DVD

• First rip the original DVD using Mac the Ripper
• Then make a new copy of the DVD using DVD2one

Editing a Movie and Burning it to DVD

• First use iMovie to edit the movie
• Then share the movie to iDVD to burn it to DVD

Making a Video Journal/Vodcast

Using iMovie

• Plug the iSite into the Firewire port
• Open iMovie and capture your video
• Share the video to Quicktime for web
• Save the resulting .mov file (if you want it online, be sure to save to your wwwdocs folder)

Using VideoCue

• Plug the iSite into the Firewire port
• Open VideoCue and capture your video
• Save your video (if you want it online, be sure to save to your wwwdocs folder)

Maintaining the International TV Recording System

• The system is set up according to the diagram:

=Re-syncing the System

• If the system complains that it is tuned to a station that we do not subscribe to, the DISH Network Receiver is likely out of sync with the ReplayTV
• Use the DISH Network Receivers remote to manually tune to a station we DO subscribe to (see the list at the DISH Network page). Note: be careful to only tune the receiver in question! It is especially important to make sure the 3rd receiver remains tuned to 675 - TV Japan!
• If the affected receiver was #1 or #2, once you have tuned it you must use the ReplayTV remote to tune the corresponding ReplayTV to the same channel.

Making a DVD of a Pre-recorded International TV Program

• Use DVArchive to download the TV program.
• Use FfmpegX to convert the downloaded file to
• Use iDVD to make a DVD of the new video file.
