First you will need to disable system restore.

To disable system restore for Windows XP:

#Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore

#On the Left side of the System Restore Window there is a System Restore Settings Link. Click on that.

#On this Window there is a check box to turn off System Restore. Check it and click 'Apply' and then 'OK'.

To disable system restore in Windows Vista

#Click on Start

#In the search box type 'System' and click on 'System' when it is found.

#In the new window that came up click 'System Protection' (it's on the left side of the window).

#You should have a new window that popped up with check boxes. Uncheck the box that says 'Local Disk (C:)(System). It has a little Windows flag.

#A new box should have came up and asks you to 'Turn System Restore off'. Click on that button.

Now that system restore is disabled you will need to boot to safe mode to run some scans.

Here's what you need to do to boot to safe mode (it works the same way in Windows XP and Windows Vista):

#Restart your computer

#When your computer is rebooting repeatedly tap the 'F8' button.

#After roughly 15-30 seconds you should be prompted to select a version of Windows to boot in. Select Safe Mode with Networking.

#A bunch of weird text will display on the screen, this is normal. When windows comes up it will ask if you if you are sure you want to be in safe mode. Click 'yes'.

Now we are ready to run the scans. Here's what you need to do to run the scan.

#Click Start -> All Programs -> Symantec Endpoint Protection -> Symantec Endpoint Protection

#This will open Symantec Endpoint Protection. On the left side of the Symantec window click on the 'Scan for threats' button.

#Click on 'Run full scan'.

'''Please note: Beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year, 鶹Ƶ Technology Services will no longer offer Symantec Endpoint Protection for installation on personally-owned computers. Campus network users (Windows) will still be required to have a functional antivirus program installed on their computer. These programs include Norton, Kaspersky, etc. On Windows 8 machines, the standard Windows Defender program is recommended.'''

#Navigate to [http://malwarebytes.org/ Malwarebytes] and download and install the software.

#Once the software is installed open Malwarebytes from the link placed on your desktop.

#Check the 'Full Scan' box and click scan.

#When the scan completes click 'Show Results' and then remove the infected files.
