Cascade Checklist

Checklist created to help with the cascade process.

Step One: Check Crashplan for Backup Status

  1. Have a dutyperson login to crashplan.gac.edu
  2. Enter the computer name of the device in the search field.
  3. Verify the backup is at least 99% complete.

Step One, part 2: Back up computer with Deploystudio

  1. Plug in the computer's power and ethernet at the laptop station or in new setup room.
  2. Boot to the network (Hold N while it powers on, you will see a globe)
  3. Log in with your 鶹Ƶ username and password
  4. Select Create Backup
  5. For the backup name, use their username_MMDDYYYY as the name.
  6. If no disk is available to backup, they may have personally encrypted their hard drive without using the 鶹Ƶ managed FileVault. They will need to turn Filevault off for it to successfully back up.

Step Two: Create the user

Power on the Mac and follow the on screen prompts. If you do not see the words, "鶹Ƶ" on the fourth step in the setup process, you will need to netboot the computer (Hold N during startup) to DeployStudio, and erase the hard drive (log in, go to the Utilities menu, open Disk Utility, click on the main drive, click erase(AppleAPFSMedia), and rename it Macintosh HD. After erasing the drive, image the drive with the Sierra_Vanilla image.

When creating the user enter their name and use their 鶹Ƶ username for the ‘Account name:’ field. Use ‘changeme’ as the password.

Note: You must be connected to a network for this to work.

Step Three: Updates

Once you’ve completed the Setup Assistant the Mac desktop will appear. Shortly thereafter Managed Software Center will open and begin downloading updates. When updates have finished downloading click the install button.

Note: Enterprise Connect will open during while Managed Software Center is running. You can close out of it.

Step Four: Crashplan Restore

As usual, the data transfer is the trickiest part of a Cascade. Follow these steps carefully.

  1. Reset the users domain password if this has not been done yet.
  2. While logged in as the user, open and sign into CrashPlan as the user.
  3. Choose ‘Replace Existing’, click Start, Choose the previous computer's backup, click continue, click transfer files.
  4. You will now be prompted to select which files to restore. In many, but not all, cases you will select the users Home folder located in Macintosh HD → Users → <username>. Then click Get Files.
  5. If the username in step 4 does not match the Account name that you created in step one ask a Dutyperson for help. If it matches, continue to the next step.
  6. You will now be asked what to do with the files you’ve selected.
  7. Save files to: Original Location
  8. If File Exists: Overwrite
  9. Permissions: Current
  10. Click Go
  11. Click Continue
  12. This next screen will continue to download their data. Depending on how much data they have, the restore could take 1-2 days or more.
  13. Go to System Preferences, go to Energy Saver, and choose never, click ok.
  14. Click on the CrashPlan icon, then click on the gear icon, select Preferences, then change the CPU percentage to 80 from 20.
  15. Reverse the changes you made in the previous two steps.
  16. The CrashPlan app may log you out, however the data is still downloading.

Step Five: Verify Crashplan Restore

Check to make sure that Crashplan has restored data successfully. Check bookmarks, Documents, Desktop to verify their data is in place.

Step Six: Install Printers & Update/Install Other Software

  1. Use Managed Software Center to install the printers.
  2. Use Managed Software Center to install software that the user wants installed. Refer to ticket for specialized software requests.
  3. Click Updates to make sure all installed software is up to date.

Step Seven: Universal Cascade Letter

Customize (replace the items in bold italic that are placeholders) and print a File:2018macletter.docx for each user.

Step Eight: Delivery

Deliver the prepared Mac to the user and assist them with signing into Enterprise Connect.

  1. Sync their password using the 鶹Ƶ user setting page.
  2. Open Enterprise Connect and have them sign in with their 鶹Ƶ username and password.
  3. When prompted, enter their login password ( ‘changeme’ ). Enterprise Connect should report the passwords are in sync.
  4. Answer any additional questions they may have.

Step Nine: Store Old Equipment

Put the users old laptop into storage once delivery has been completed.
