Welcome to ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅' Fish Collection! With support from the Rubert Anderson Award in Systematics, Josh Hammer and Carl Stenoien have made improvements and partially cataloged the contents of ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅' marine and freshwater fish collection. The Rubert Anderson Award in Systematics is given to small teams of students who desire to improve one of the ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅' Biology Collections. The award includes a small in house grant that the students use for supplies and support in improving the status of the collection and creating an online database.
Much of the contents of the original collection were destroyed in the tornado of 1998, but enough jars survived to make this project possible. Also, many of the jars had little or no collection information and were haphazardly organized. Overall, our contributions included reorganizing the shelves, relabeling and cataloging every jar, and posting some of the specimens here.
Of all species diversity in the collection, an estimated 40% is shown here. Thirteen families of freshwater fish and several families of marine fish are represented in the collection. Some of these families are alphabetized below. Within each family the individual specimens are sorted alphabetically by scientific name. Specimens are shown with on a cm scale. All collection data, if available, is posted as well. Finally, each specimen has a link to a corresponding page in , the most comprehensive fish database in the world.
The specimens in this collection are used by several classes at ΒιΆΉΚΣΖ΅, including Aquatic Biology, Vertebrate Biology, and Fish and Fisheries.
