Business Intelligence Solutions from Microsoft

Business Intelligence (BI) is a buzz word right now. Essentially it is something most organizations have been carrying out in some shape or form but now companies such as Microsoft and Business Objects are marketing their core products in an integrated group under the Business Intelligence banner.

Data Infrastructure and the BI Platform

In the Microsoft world BI starts with the data infrastructure and BI platform. SQL Server 2008 provides SQL Analysis Services, SQL Reporting Services, SQL Integration Services, Data mining and Data warehousing.

If we take CarweB as an example case, The CarweB "VRR Host" database is a large database of details on all UK vehicles. It gets feeds from other suppliers of data such as Police notification of stolen vehicles and extra manufacture data on the vehicles. Typical end users of the system are car dealers needing a quick way to import all the specific details onto a potential sales sheet, web site or portal.

If we then add some Business Intelligence to this database we can start by data cubing vehicle data by post code region, filtering this by CO2 emissions, linking into Geo software such as Microsoft MapPoint and schedule a report of this data and now we can see real time reports of areas of the country that have high CO2 levels due solely to vehicle emissions.

Business Middle Tier

Built using either bespoke asp.net development or SharePoint the business middle tier involves developing web based forms, workflow, dashboards, scorecards and any line of business data integration.
