[[Image:adobe_ct.jpg|frame|right]]

'''Adobe Contribute''' is a [[WYSIWYG]] [[web page]] editor that is used at Â鶹ÊÓƵ to maintain an increasing number of parts of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ [[website]].

== Installing ==
If you do not have Contribute installed on your College-owned computer and want to use it, please contact the [[Technology Helpline]].

== Getting started ==
If you have Contribute installed on your computer and are ready to jump in, the best place to start is the built-in tutorial. To access the tutorial, take the following steps:

# Open Contribute.
# In the [[menu bar]], select '''Help > Contribute Tutorial'''
# If using Contribute CS5, the Contribute Tutorial is located in the lower right of the initial pop up screen.

== Setting up ==
=== Personal homepages ===
To set up Contribute to maintain your personal homepage, please follow the steps outlined in the [[Personal_homepage#Contribute|personal homepage]].

=== Organization website ===
To set up Contribute to maintain your organization's website, please follow the steps outlined in the [[Student organization websites#Contribute|student organization websites article]].

=== Department or office website ===

==== Obtaining access ====
If you would like to make changes to your department or office website, please contact [[Web Services]] via [[e-mail]] at [mailto:web@gustavus.edu web@gustavus.edu]. Web Services will configure your website so that you can edit it in Contribute.

==== Connecting ====
After Web Services has configured your website, you will need to set up Contribute's connection to your website by installing a connection key. If you already have set up a connection to edit a different Â鶹ÊÓƵ website, you can probably skip this.

# [[Media:Â鶹ÊÓƵ.stc|Download the Â鶹ÊÓƵ connection key]].
# Open Contribute.
# In the [[menu bar]] click on "Edit > My Connections" (Windows) or "Contribute > My Connections" (Mac).
# A new window should appear. In this window, click on the button labeled "Import."
# Browse to the location of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ connection key you downloaded in step 1.
# Select the Â鶹ÊÓƵ connection key.
# Your connection should now be set up and you should be able to edit your website.

== Saving a connection key ==
Since the computers in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ labs reset themselves each time you log out, you are forced to recreate a connection to your website each time you want to use Contribute. However, Contribute can save your connections to a file, allowing you to easily restore them later.

Please note: these steps are only necessary if you're working in a lab environment.

To save a connection key:
# Go to Edit -> Administer Websites -> [Name of your website Connection].
# Select your name and click "Send Connection Key."
# Click Next, then click next again.
# Select "Save to local machine." Choose a password you can remember enter it into the password boxes. Click Next, then click Done.
# Contribute will ask you where you’d like to save the connection key. Save it in your Documents folder on your [[home directory]].
# Click Close.

The Contribute connection to your website is now saved. To load your settings the next time you want to work on your website, just go to your home directory and double-click on the connection key you just saved.

==Troubleshooting==
If you are having problems connecting to your website, try to remove and re-add your connection by following these steps:
# Open Contribute.
# Go to Edit -> My Connections.
# In the window that appears, click on "Publishing Server."
# Click on the "Remove" button at the top of the window.
# Click Close.
# Quit out of Contribute.
# Follow the steps under [[#Connecting|Connecting]] to re-connect to the Publishing Server.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ maintains a public [http://gustavus.edu/orgs list of student organizations] who have completed [http://gustavus.edu/sao/organize/?pr=create the recognition process] each year. Your organization's name in the list will automatically link to your website as long as you specified one in the recognition process. You can also add this information later by [http://gustavus.edu/sao/organize/?pr=manage editing your organization].

Keep in mind you're free to host your organization's website on a 3rd party host (such as [http://sites.google.com Google Sites]), but if you wish to create a new website to be hosted on the gustavus.edu domain (<nowiki>http://gustavus.edu/orgs/</nowiki>''yourorganization''), you must [[Student_organization_websites#Obtaining_access|contact Web Services]] to find out what your exact [[URL]] will be.

==Editing your website==
While you may use any software you are comfortable with to maintain your organization's website (e.g. [[Adobe Dreamweaver]], [[TextMate]], [[Emacs]], etc.), we only support [[Adobe Contribute]] at this time. If you choose to not use Contribute, you will need to use a program that is capable of connecting to our server using the Secure FTP ([[SFTP]]) protocol (e.g. [[WinSCP]] or [[FileZilla]]).

These are the details you will need to connect to your organization's website:

{| class="fancy"
!Connection type
|Secure FTP ([[SFTP]])
|-
!Host
|orgs.gustavus.edu
|-
!Username
|Your [[Â鶹ÊÓƵ username]]
|-
!Password
|Your [[Â鶹ÊÓƵ password]]
|-
!Remote directory
|/cis/www/orgs/yourorganization/
|-
![[URL]]
|<nowiki>http://orgs.gustavus.edu/yourorganization/</nowiki>
|}

===Contribute===
To set up Contribute to maintain your organization's website, please follow these steps:

# Open Contribute.
# In the [[menu bar]], select '''Edit > My Connections'''.
# Click on the button labeled "Create..."
# A new window will pop up. Click "Next >"
# Under "What do you want to connect to?" make sure that "Website" is selected. In the box that asks "What is the web address (URL) of your website?" type in the URL to your organization's website. For your reference, this should resemble <nowiki>http://orgs.gustavus.edu/yourorganization/</nowiki>
# Click "Next >"
# Under "How do you connect to your web server?" select "Secure FTP (STFP)".
# Under "What is the name of your SFTP server?" type ftp.gac.edu
# Type your [[Â鶹ÊÓƵ username]] and [[Â鶹ÊÓƵ password|password]] into the other two boxes and click "Next >"
# Under "On the SFTP server, what folder contains your website?" enter "/cis/www" followed by the directory your organization's website is in. For instance, if your organization's website was located at <nowiki>http://orgs.gustavus.edu/yourorganization/</nowiki> then you should enter "/cis/www/orgs/yourorganization/".
# Click "Next >". Enter your name and email in the corresponding text boxes.
# Click "Next >". You should now see a summary window with the information you previously filled out. Click "Done" to finish.

If you are using Contribute on a lab computer, you might want to [[Adobe Contribute#Saving a connection key|save your connection key]] in your [[home directory]] to use later.

'''Adobe Contribute''' is a [[WYSIWYG]] [[web page]] editor that is used at Â鶹ÊÓƵ to maintain an increasing number of parts of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ [[website]].

== Installing ==
If you do not have Contribute installed on your College-owned computer and want to use it, please contact the [[Technology Helpline]].

== Getting started ==

== Setting up ==
=== Personal homepages ===
To set up Contribute to maintain your personal homepage, please follow the steps outlined in the [[Personal_homepage#Contribute|personal homepage]].

=== Organization website ===
To set up Contribute to maintain your organization's website, please follow the steps outlined in the [[Student organization websites#Contribute|student organization websites article]].

=== Department or office website ===

==== Obtaining access ====
If you would like to make changes to your department or office website, please contact [[Web Services]] via [[e-mail]] at [mailto:web@gustavus.edu web@gustavus.edu]. Web Services will configure your website so that you can edit it in Contribute.

==== Connecting ====

# In the [[menu bar]] click on "Edit > My Connections."
# A new window should appear. In this window, click on the button labeled "Import."
# Browse to the location the Â鶹ÊÓƵ connection key you downloaded in step 1.
# Select the Â鶹ÊÓƵ connection key.
# Your connection should now be set up and you should be able to edit your website.

== Saving a connection key ==

==Troubleshooting==
==How to==
The instructions below assume you already have a blog at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. If you would like to start a new blog, [mailto:web@gustavus.edu contact Web Services].

#First, you'll want to go to the webpage that your blog is on. For example, you point your [[web browser]] to the admin page for your blog (e.g. if your blog was located at <nowiki>http://blogname.blog.gustavus.edu/</nowiki> then your admin page will be located at <nowiki>https://blogname.blog.gustavus.edu/wp-admin/</nowiki>)
# Log in using your [[Â鶹ÊÓƵ username]] and [[Â鶹ÊÓƵ password|password]].
# This should bring up the dashboard, which gives you information about the blog. On the left is your blog admin navigation. Move your mouse over "Posts" and click on the downward-pointing arrow that appears, to reveal the Posts options.
# Click on "Add New."
# This should bring up the post composition page. If you are familiar with [[Microsoft Word]], it is pretty straightforward from here. The title (most important part of the post) goes in the box at the top and the body goes in the big box below that. On the right, you can add [[tags]] and put it in a [[category]].
# When you are happy with your post, click on the button on the right labeled "Publish."
# Sit back and relax while your post is automatically sent to your blog's page, all of your subscribers, the main blog page, the oncampus page, and many other pages across the Â鶹ÊÓƵ [[website]].

Â鶹ÊÓƵ '''Web Services''' is a unit of Â鶹ÊÓƵ [[GTS|Technology Services]].

Web Services exists to provide web-based solutions and support to the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community. The members of the unit develop and design feature-rich, user-friendly web-based applications and pages and then teach members of the [[campus community|Â鶹ÊÓƵ community]] how to use them. This means they write code, draw pictures, and talk with people about our code and pictures. However, Web Services also has their hands in projects that are not exactly part of the [[World Wide Web|web]], such as [[Really Simple Syndication|RSS]] and [[e-mail]].
[[Category:World Wide Web]]
Jlencion/gts/w/index.php?title=Local_navigation&diff=23462Local navigation2011-05-12T14:18:51Z
Jlencion: /* Formatting */

'''Local navigation''' is the set of links on a [[web page]] that provide a mechanism for visitors to navigate a subset of a larger website. Local navigation is the counterpart to [[global navigation]] and can be especially useful for providing an easy and consistent way to access specific pages within a section of a [[website]].

On the Â鶹ÊÓƵ website, the local navigation appears on the left side of each page, usually in a tan-colored vertical bar.

==Â鶹ÊÓƵ template==
In the [[Â鶹ÊÓƵ template]], the local navigation can be easily customized using [[Contribute]].

===Formatting===
All links should be in an [[unordered list|unordered (bulleted) list]]. Separate sections of links should be separate lists, each preceded by level 2 headings (<h2>).

===Implementation===
Each page shares a common local navigation.

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ template has a mechanism that will look for a file in the same directory called "site_nav.php". If it cannot find it in that directory, it will search for the same file in the parent directory. If it cannot find it there, it will search for it an additional level higher. Finally, if "site_nav.php" is not in that directory, the mechanism stops looking.

If "site_nav.php" does not exist, you will need to create it. This should simply be a set of links in an unordered (bulleted) list.

The '''Â鶹ÊÓƵ template''' is a system of creating pages for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ [[website]]. [[Web page|Web pages]] which use the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template share a common navigation structure and maintain a consistent look and feel throughout the Â鶹ÊÓƵ website. This system allows [[Web Services]] to make improvements and updates to every page that is in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template quickly and easily, and helps to ensure that these pages meet [[accessibility]] and [[usability]] [[web standards]].

==How it works==
A web page that uses the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template is said to be "'''in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template'''." When editing such a page in [[Adobe Contribute]], it won't look exactly like a Â鶹ÊÓƵ page even though it will when viewing it on the web. This is a bare-bones version of your page which only contains its editable parts. When you publish your page, the Â鶹ÊÓƵ [[web server]] will pull each of these blocks of information out of the template container page and use them to generate the document that everyone can see in their [[web browser]] when they visit your site.

==Components==
A page in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template is made up of several components. Some of them are directly editable on the page by the person maintaining the site, some of them are modifiable by Web Services on a per-site basis, and some of them are static across all Â鶹ÊÓƵ pages.

===Directly editable sections===
You can directly edit the content of the following three sections of your page:
# The page's '''Title'''.
# The page's '''Subtitle'''.
# The page's main '''Content'''.

These three sections are described below.

====Title====
Your page's title should be concise, descriptive, and unique. When your page is published, this title will show up in the following three places:

# As a large heading at the top of the page.
# In the breadcrumb trail.
# As part of the [[HTML]] document's title in the browser.

Additionally, your page's title will show up in search results when people use [[search engine|search engines]] such as [[Google]]. Therefore, a well thought-out title is very important because it will help people find your page.

====Subtitle====
Your page may optionally have a subtitle. When published, this subtitle will show up below the page's title and as part of the page's title in the browser. Resultingly, the subtitle makes up part of the link text for search engines.

====Content====
This is where your page's main content goes.
{{section-stub}}

===Local navigation===
The [[local navigation]] is a list of links to pages in your site that appears on the left side of the page. Unless your site is very large and complex, most (if not all) of your site's pages should be linked to in this area, and the same list of links should appear on every page. Local navigation serves as the road map to your site, and a little extra time spent planning this and naming things in a logical way can have a tremendous impact in making your site easier to use.

Usually, each link to a page should be that page's title (or a very close approximation). If your link text seems too vague, there is a good chance you should rename your page to have a more descriptive title. Additionally, you can add a short description to the link by giving it a [[title attribute]].

You may be thinking, '''"Gosh, that's going to be a pain to edit every single page when I want to update a link in the navigation."''' And you're right. That's why many Â鶹ÊÓƵ sites make use of a feature in scripting languages called '''including''', to include a separate navigation links file (specifically, the
include()
function in [[PHP]]). This makes updating your local navigation a lot quicker because you only have to change one file. At Â鶹ÊÓƵ, our convention is to name this file of links
site_nav.php
.

===Customizable sections===
Web Services can make some customizations to sites, as long as these customizations fit into the look and feel of the rest of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template.

====Banner====
Web Services can work with departments to create a departmental banner for a site that goes between the Global Navigation and Breadcrumb Navigation sections. This can provide a substantial distinction and visual identity for individual departments. For example, the [http://gustavus.edu/arborutem/ Linnaeus Arboretum] uses custom banners.

====Aux box====
The aux box is the area that appears between the page's main content and footer and is used for additional information that falls outside of the scope of the current page's content. Web Services can customize this area on a per-site basis to contain only information specific to that department, office, or organization. For example, the [http://gustavus.edu/philosophy/ Philosophy department]. If you'd like to add this to your site, compile a list of these custom items for your department and contact Web Services.

=====Available types of content=====
There is a variety of types of content that are currently available for your aux box, including:
*[[Profiles]]
*Upcoming events
*[[Blog]] entries

===Static sections===
====Page container====
A common question Web Services gets is ''"Why are all the pages so narrow?"''. The Â鶹ÊÓƵ website is used by a very wide audience, and we strive to make it as accessible and usable as possible for all of them. While some users may have giant [[monitors]] running at massive [[resolutions]], some users do not. Our statistics show that most visitors view our site at a resolution of at least '''1024x768''', and the current page width of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Template reflects that minimum. While vertical scrolling is common and generally considered a necessary method of browsing websites, forcing the user to scroll horizontally is a huge failing in usability.

====Masthead====
The black bar that contains the logo is informally called the '''header''' or '''masthead'''. On the left side of the masthead, the [http://gustavus.edu/publications/style/wordmark.cfm|Â鶹ÊÓƵ Wordmark] links to [http://gustavus.edu the home page]. The right side contains a multi-purpose search box which provides a fast way to perform a [http://google.com Google] search of Â鶹ÊÓƵ' website (or the Internet), a [[College calendar]] search or a search of the electronic [[Gribly]].

Below this is the '''Global Navigation bar''', which contains the most frequently used sections of the website.

Below the Global Navigation (and Banner, if present) is the '''Breadcrumb''' trail. This series of parent directory links mimics the file structure on the web server, and provides users a clear representation of where they are in relation to the site's home page. This is especially important if the user lands directly on a page buried in several directories, such as from a search engine. The Breadcrumb trail allows users to quickly figure out where they are and shows them how they might get to other related content.

====Footer====
The '''footer''' contains additional links designed for different audiences. Additionally, it contains important contact information about Â鶹ÊÓƵ, including Â鶹ÊÓƵ' address.

==Why use the template?==
Web Services has done a lot of research and put a lot of time and thought into planning the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template to make it great in many ways. Some of the template's most important features can be summed up with the '''FAST''' acronym:
*'''Fast, Friendly, Flexible:''' By using streamlined, semantically meaningful [[XHTML]] markup and [[CSS]], we can achieve faster page loads, make our pages more search engine friendly, and make them easy to update in the future.
*'''Accessible:''' Our website can be used by people with special needs, such as those with visual impairments.
*'''Standards-compliant:''' We attempt to cleanly code everything to meet strict standards set by the [[W3C]] to make our pages work on as many web browsers as possible (past, present and future).
*'''Tableless:''' We strive to have all of our pages use only semantically-meaningful code. Modern web design strives to separate presentation from content, replacing the antiquated (and semantically incorrect) method of using tables to organize and lay out non-tabular data. The Â鶹ÊÓƵ template takes the modern approach of using [[CSS]] exclusively to control the look and feel of the site.

Most importantly, changes made to the underlying template framework are reflected immediately, site wide, on every single page in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template. This means that we can focus on keeping ahead of changing trends and standards without having to manually edit each page. Your site will benefit without any unnecessary headaches or downtime.

Moreover, creating a consistent, easily relatable, and highly predictable user experience is good for everyone.

===Other features===
We have several convenient tools built into the template which we continually improve and add to:
* Send feedback
* Breadcrumb navigation
* Global navigation
* Useful footer information

==How it works==

==Components==
A page in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template is made up of several components. Some of them are directly editable on the page by the person maintaining the site, some of them are modifiable by Web Services on a per-site basis, and some of them are static across all Â鶹ÊÓƵ pages.

===Directly editable sections===
You can directly edit the content of the following three sections of your page:
# The page's '''Title'''.
# The page's '''Subtitle'''.
# The page's main '''Content'''.

These three sections are described below.

====Title====

====Subtitle====
Your page may optionally have a subtitle. When published, this subtitle will show up below the page's title and as part of the page's title in the browser. Resultingly, the subtitle makes up part of the link text for search engines.

====Content====
This is where your page's main content goes.
{{section-stub}}

===Local navigation===

That's why many Â鶹ÊÓƵ sites make use of a feature in scripting languages called '''including''', to include a separate navigation links file (specifically, the
include()
function in [[PHP]]). This makes updating your local navigation a lot quicker because you only have to change one file. At Â鶹ÊÓƵ, our convention is to name this file of links
site_nav.php
.

===Customizable sections===
Web Services can make some customizations to sites, as long as these customizations fit into the look and feel of the rest of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template.

====Banner====

====Aux box====

=====Available types of content=====
There is a variety of types of content that are currently available for your aux box, including:
*[[Profiles]]
*Upcoming events
*[[Blog]] entries

===Static sections===
====Page container====

====Masthead====

====Footer====
The '''footer''' contains additional links designed for different audiences. Additionally, it contains important contact information about Â鶹ÊÓƵ, including Â鶹ÊÓƵ' address.

==Why use the template?==

===Other features===
We have several convenient tools built into the template which we continually improve and add to:
* Send feedback
* Page rating
* Breadcrumb navigation
* Global navigation

==How it works==

==Components==
A page in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template is made up of several components. Some of them are directly editable on the page by the person maintaining the site, some of them are modifiable by Web Services on a per-site basis, and some of them are static across all Â鶹ÊÓƵ pages.

===Directly editable sections===
You can directly edit the content of the following three sections of your page:
# The page's '''Title'''.
# The page's '''Subtitle'''.
# The page's main '''Content'''.

These three sections are described below.

====Title====

====Subtitle====
Your page may optionally have a subtitle. When published, this subtitle will show up below the page's title and as part of the page's title in the browser. Resultingly, the subtitle makes up part of the link text for search engines.

====Content====
This is where your page's main content goes.
{{section-stub}}

===Local navigation===

That's why many Â鶹ÊÓƵ sites make use of a feature in scripting languages called '''including''', to include a separate navigation links file (specifically, the
include()
function in [[PHP]]). This makes updating your local navigation a lot quicker because you only have to change one file. At Â鶹ÊÓƵ, our convention is to name this file of links
site_nav.php
.

===Customizable sections===
Web Services can make some customizations to sites, as long as these customizations fit into the look and feel of the rest of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ template.

====Banner====
Web Services can work with departments to create a departmental banner for a site that goes between the Global Navigation and Breadcrumb Navigation sections. This can provide a substantial distinction and visual identity for individual departments. For example, the [http://www.gustavus.edu/academics/classics/ Classics] and [http://www.gustavus.edu/academics/english/ English] departments use custom banners.

====Aux box====
When pages use 3 columns, the aux box, or right column, is typically used for randomly chosen Â鶹ÊÓƵ trivia and announcements titled "Did You Know?" However, Web Services can customize this column on a per-site basis to contain only information specific to that department, office, or organization. For example, the [http://gustavus.edu/academics/english/ English department]'s aux box has departmental announcements and randomly-cycling "What We're Reading" messages by English professors. If you'd like to add this to your site, compile a list of these custom items for your department and contact Web Services.

=====Available types of content=====
There is a variety of types of content that are currently available for your aux box, including:
*[[Profiles]]
*Upcoming events
*[[Blog]] entries
*Random factoids

===Static sections===
====Page container====

====Masthead====

====Footer====
The '''footer''' contains an additional bar of links designed for different audiences. Additionally, it contains important contact information about Â鶹ÊÓƵ, including Â鶹ÊÓƵ' address, contact information and privacy policy. This contact information is marked up as an [[hCard]], according to the hCard [[microformat]], which allows the information to easily be used and re-purposed in other ways.

==Why use the template?==

A '''Double-click''' is the act of pressing a computer button twice quickly without moving the mouse. Double-clicking can be found on all computers on campus. A double click is most often employed to open the selected item whereas a single click is used to select items, follow hyperlinks, and activate buttons (such as submitting a form).

On mice with two or more buttons, double clicking is usually done only with the primary (left) mouse button.

==How to Double-click==

To double-click, press the computer mouse button twice in quick succession.

If you are having problems double-clicking, it is possible to adjust the speed. Adjusting double-click settings can be done by:

*[[Windows XP]] - Start > Control Panel > Mouse > Buttons (Start > Control Panel > Printers & Other Hardware > Mouse > Buttons if Control Panel is in Category view)
*[[Mac OS X]] - Applications > System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Mouse

==How to==
The instructions below assume you already have a blog at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. If you would like to start a new blog Contact, [mailto:web@gustavus.edu].

On the right, you can put in[[tags]] and put it in a certain [[category]].
# When you are happy with your post, click on the button on the right labeled "Publish."
# Sit back and relax while your post is automatically sent to your blog's page, all of your subscribers, the main blog page, the oncampus page, and many other pages across the Â鶹ÊÓƵ [[website]].
