Welcome to the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Bird Collection!

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ Biology Department's collection of live-mounted bird specimens includes members of 16 orders and 36 families. Additional live-mounted specimens are present in the collection, but have degraded to an extent where they are no longer useful as study specimens. In addition to the department's live-mounted bird collection, its assemblage of study skins consists of 3 orders and 20 families, providing additional diversity in the collection. Both the live-mounts and study skins are primarily used as teaching instruments for courses at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, such as Vertebrate Zoology. Information on where and when individual specimens were collected is not present for most of the collection. As such, most of the specimens in the collection are not useful for studies in ecology or evolution, but can be used by students or faculty interested in other studies, such as Comparative Anatomy.

The live-mount collection is especially rich in dabbling and diving ducks from the family Anatidae, including the green-winged teal, common and hooded merganser, wood duck, and ring-necked duck. Also well represented are specimens from the family Phasianidae, including the ring-necked pheasant, gray partridge, greater prairie chicken, and ruffed grouse. In addition, the collection includes a variety of species from the family Icteridae, including the common grackle, red-winged blackbird, and eastern meadowlark.

Live-mounted bird specimens and study skins of reasonable quality are shown here. Within each order specimens are sorted first by family and then alphabetically by common name. Information on the common name, scientific name, class, order, family, number of specimens present, and, when available, the date the specimen was collected, the location of collection, and the sex of the individual are provided for each species. Additionally, each specimen has a link to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website in order to provide a greater breadth of information.

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ Entomology Collection contains six drawers of pinned dragonfly specimens collected on the island of Negros in the Philippines in the general vicinity of Dumaguete City during the months of July, August, and September in 1970. The collector of the material remains a mystery, the pinned specimens were labelled with date and location only, and not identified.

Having access to no keys or guidebooks for the Odonata of the Philippines, I’ve turned to sources for nearby areas of tropical Asia. Thus my determinations have relied on John Michalski’s book ''A Manual for the Identification of the Dragonflies and Damselflies of New Guinea, Maluku and the Solomon Islands'' (2012), but have also consulted ''Dragonflies of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore'' (2005) by A.G.Orr and ''Dragonflies of Singapore'' (2010) by Tang Hung Bun, Wang Luan Keng, and Matti Hämäläinen. Various online resources were consulted as well. All names have been checked for current status on the World Odonata List compiled by Martin Schorr and Dennis Paulson. If there was any uncertainty in the identification, the determination was made to genus only. Please inform us of any errors or of any corrections that might be made.

Insects are small, invertebrate animals found in nearly every conceivable terrestrial environment. As adults, they have stiff exoskeletons and their bodies are organized into three main regions: head, thorax and abdomen. The head contains one pair of antennae, a pair of compound eyes, and mouthparts that are modified to slice, suck, pierce, lap and/or tear. The thorax contains three pairs of legs and, usually, two pairs of wings. One pair is often modified (like a beetle's 'shell' - composed of modified wings called eltyrae). Many insects are organized and grouped by their wing form and function. The adult abdomen does not contain legs, but may contain a stinger – watch out!

The basic insect body plan has many variations – think of the differences between a mosquito and a ladybug – and more than 1,200,000 species of insects exist. Within the class Insecta, these species are grouped into approximately 26 orders (there is some flux in the number of recognized orders). Approximately one third of these orders are represented in our collection.

The insect collection was started more than 50 years ago and contains thousands of insects collected by current and former faculty and students. The specimens in this collection are used by several classes at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, including Organismal Biology, Invertebrate Zoology, Entomology, Freshwater Biology and Aquatic Stewardship. The collection is also used by Entomologists in the broader, scientific community.

Welcome to the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Fish Collection!

Much of the original Biology Department fish collection (specimens and field notebooks) was destroyed in the tornado of 1998. As a result, many of the specimens now only exist as a teaching collection serving a variety of aquatic and vertebrate courses at Â鶹ÊÓƵ including Aquatic Biology, Vertebrate Biology, Comparative Anatomy, and Fish & Fisheries.

The University of Washington gave a permanent loan of teaching specimens to Dr. Carlin, which are now available for use by Â鶹ÊÓƵ students and faculty for research. There are 58 lots (at least 140 individual specimens) mostly from the freshwater and marine habitats of the Pacific Northwest. Northern gamefishes like rainbow trout and mountain whitefish are present, but so are commercial seafood species (capelin, Pacific hake) and evolutionary wonders (seahorses, hagfish, parrotfish and frogfish). All of the specimens are preserved either in alcohol or as dried specimens, but none have specific locality data. Without a properly recorded place and time of collection, these specimens are not useful in studies of ecology or evolution. However they are available for use by students interested in other research projects, such as comparative anatomy.

Of the species diversity in the entire collection, an estimated 40% is shown here. Thirteen families of freshwater fish and several families of marine fish are represented in the collection. Within each family the individual specimens are sorted alphabetically by scientific name. Specimens are shown on a cm scale. Any available collection data is provided with each specimen. Finally, each specimen has a link to a corresponding page in [http://www.fishbase.org/search.php Fishbase], the most comprehensive fish database in the world.
