Always at the Top

It rises from the Minnesota River Valley as you head west up College Avenue. Built of Kasota limestone quarried just a few miles away, it’s a testament to our college’s history, longevity, and evolution. Yes, it’s on the National Register of Historic places. Yes, it’s an active center of study, home to several academic departments and the Chaplain’s Office. Yes, check out the view.

What’s Cool About It

It was our first college building in Saint Peter, with a cornerstone laid by settlers in 1875 on what had been Dakota land less than a generation earlier. The College grew so quickly that by 1905 folks were already calling the building Old Main. Back then, faculty and seniors ate a cap-and-gown breakfast on its roof on graduation day. Now, graduating seniors stop for selfies on its steps before Commencement. A semi-secret study spot is the Ã…ke & Kristina Bonnier Reading Room and Jewish Studies Library on the quiet third floor. Just watch for the ghost of the security guard as he makes his nightly rounds.
