Making the most of your employment

Many students report that working while in college has also improved their time management skills, which many struggle with in the first semester. Findings from a study by Arum and Roska suggested that students who worked about 10 hours per week on campus improved their critical thinking skills at a higher rate than students who did not work.

How do I get paid?

Tracking Work Hours

  • There are currently two methods for tracking and approving time. Your department will use Homebase and .
  • Your work supervisor will tell you which method to use. If you are using Homebase, you will be trained by your supervisor how to track your hours.

Depositing Your Paycheck

You can decide if you want your pay to be deposited into your Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ student account, your bank account, or if you want to split it between the two.

How much can I earn?

  • You will see your "Student Employment Award" amount on your financial aid award letter.
  • You must complete work hours to earn the award amount.
  • This is the maximum amount you can earn through Student Employment.

How do I grow?

Student employment is a great way to build your resume while you earn a paycheck. How you decide to show up to your job each shift is your only limitation to how much you learn. Here are a few ways you can grow. Ask your supervisor if you want to learn more.

Online career-prep and leadership

Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ has partnered with the C. Charles Jackson Foundation and Charlie Life & Leadership Academy to provide Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ with a library of online leadership and life skill courses to be used throughout the campus and online community.

Charlie Life & Leadership Academy provides essential leadership knowledge and skills needed for success in today’s global economy. The easily accessible and free online leadership courses offer students the competitive edge they need to stand out as leadership through course work which develops, measures, and certifies mastery of crucial skills.

Charlie Academy is organized into 3 different categories:

  • Personal: how an individual manages their mind, body, and spirit
  • Interpersonal: how individuals engage with one another
  • Team: how groups work together to accomplish a goal

Any Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ student that wants to develop leadership and life skills, especially for those who:

  • Plan to apply to graduate school or for an internship or job within a year or two
  • Want to build a compelling portfolio of leadership credentials, showcasing skills that correlate to outstanding performance in your chosen field
  • Have little free time and want to work at a convenient, self-determined pace on content easily accessible online
  • Desire direction, focus, and confidence in the pursuit of personal goals
  • Seek to improve one’s capacity to build relationships, add value in teams, and grow in influence within organizations
  • Aim to thrive in a challenging, changing world and to influence and improve the communities in which one lives and works
  • Want to learn and practice leadership principles and skills

How does Charlie Academy work?

Individual courses can be selected by topic or students can take an initial assessment to guide their learning, which cultivates a suggested list of course to improve various skills.

Charlie Academy is a resource that is available to all Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ students, faculty, and staff. This resource can be used in various places:

  • During your club meetings
  • As a skill assessment in weeks 1 or 2 of curriculum
  • On retreats for Staff, Faculty, and Students
  • To generate discussion during class
  • As a way to help students enhance their resume

Where do students access the Charlie Academy? 

Request access to the Charlie Academy information on . It is an individual course that all students, faculty, and staff can enroll themselves in. This page houses all Charlie Academy courses as learning modules that students can progress through at their own pace or under the instructor of a Professor/Faculty/Staff/Coach.
