Housing and Room Types

First Year Student Housing

Returning Student Housing

Doubles/two-person rooms are available in the following buildings

*Open gender doubles (roommate matching regardless of gender) are available as an option in the Housing Agreement/Application, and mutual matches will select from rooms in Uhler (based on number of requests/availability).

Your roommate pairing must be confirmed (mutually matched) in your housing portal before in order to be able to select a room during a selection time slot. Search for a specific roommate (search by first or last name, or by email) and 'request roommate' to send a roommate match request, all requests must be mutually confirmed. If you do not have a specific roommate in mind, choose your top criteria and search by responses submitted under profile information.

Triples (three-person units) have one bedroom with three beds (2 are bunked), and a separate living area with three desk.

  • This room-type is available in Uhler Hall and Rundstrom Hall.
  • Gender assignments for triples are designated by floor.
  • Typically, Uhler has 8 female-designated triples, 8 male-designated triples, and 8 open-gender triples. Rundstrom has 2 female-designated triples.

*Open gender triples (roommate matching regardless of gender) are available as an option in the Housing Agreement/Application, and mutual matches will select from rooms in Uhler (based on number of requests/availability).

We are frequently asked how likely it is to be able to select a triple - and the answer can vary year to year!

There is typically more demand for male-designated triples than female-designated triples. Rising Sophomores can certainly expect it to be possible to select a triple - though not ever guaranteed if it is a year with more general interest. Forming a roommate group for a triple can also be tricky - as you need to plan to split into Doubles if you are not able to select, and sometimes the roommate experience in a triple can be more challenging. Think about your roommate grouping and backup plan carefully before deciding to pursue a triple room.

Single rooms are available in the following buildings:

  • Gibbs Hall (all rooms except those that end in 08) - one bed, one desk, one dresser/wardrobe
  • Sohre Hall - one bed, one desk, two wardrobes (built-in), vanity/sink
  • Sorensen Hall - double room with no roommate assigned (2 beds, 2 desks, 2 wardrobes; all furniture must stay in the room)
  • Uhler Hall - 1-2 beds (if beds are not un-bunkable there will still be two in the room), one desk, 1-2 wardrobes (may vary based on if they are built-in). There are very few single rooms per floor (2 per floor are designated as the CF rooms).

Single rooms are billed at a higher rate than double-occupancy spaces.

Room Selection: The number of available singles is impacted by the needs for special housing accommodations, so it is not possible to guarantee space in a particular floor or building will be available. At the time of your selection, you will see any available spaces that match your gender designation.

Four-person units are available in Arbor View Apartments, Chapel View Townhomes, College View Apartments, Southwest Hall suites, Southwest Hall apartments, and Uhler Hall Quads.

  • College View apartments, Arbor View apartments and Southwest apartments are four-person units consisting of two double bedrooms and include a kitchen and full bathroom.
  • Chapel View Townhomes consist of four single bedrooms per unit and include a kitchen and full bathroom.
  • Southwest Suites consist of four single rooms around a common living space (no full kitchen). At the time a Southwest Suite is selected, the individual room assignment of each student must be indicated (i.e. 216A, 216B, 216C, 216D).
  • Uhler Quads: A limited number of four-person units are available in Uhler Hall, requiring four students of the same gender. These units have two double bedrooms (bunked) and a living area, but do not have a kitchen or personal restroom.
  • The housing available in the Arbor View Apartments, Chapel View Townhomes, College View Apartments, and Southwest Hall are open to any 4-person roommate group regardless of gender/gender identity. Groups attempting to select a four-person unit must have all mutually matched in the Roommates/Suitemates section.

Groups attempting to select a four-person unit MUST have matched in the  with the correct number of roommates. Groups selecting for four-person units will receive a selection time slot based class year (year in residence), Housing Agreement submission timestamp, averaged amongst roommates. Students are not guaranteed a space in four-person housing, even as a Senior. Based on class size and number of four-person spaces available, students should anticipate that all four-person units will be selected by rising Seniors. Sophomores and Juniors should focus on selection for Single, Double, or Triple room types. Groups with a mixture of a rising Seniors and Juniors should also not expect to be able to select an apartment unit - by the time your time slot opens they will have been selected by groups of four rising Seniors (or groups of rising Seniors with a 9th semester/5th year student).

Gender and Housing

Open-gender housing on campus is 'opt in' - with specific floor/building designations to form communities that have selected open-gender housing options. Students interested should select the Doubles - Open Gender or Triples - Open Gender room type to be able to select into an open gender community and match with a roommate that has also opted into that community.

LGBTQ+ individuals need and deserve to feel included in their housing. Labels can often be limiting; we want to provide people who identify as LGBTQ+ the opportunity to choose housing that doesn't require a label (gender binary or male or female).ÌýIt is important that students be able to select gender-neutral housing and have access to communities that will meet the needs of how they identify in order to explore and celebrate LGBTQ+ identity and culture.Ìý

The "We Are Community" strives to fill this need. Created through a partnership of LGBTQ+ students and allies living on campus and the Office of Residential Life and operating under the vision and mission of Â鶹ÊÓƵ, we believe that all people in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community should feel a sense of belonging, and there should be equitable access to all resources, including housing opportunities. We hope this community allows for a more inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for those identifying within and supporting the LGBTQ+ community.Ìý

The We Are first-year student community is located on a dedicated floor in Norelius Hall, H Tower. If you have questions about this housing option, please email reslife [at] gustavus.edu (reslife[at]gustavus[dot]edu.)

Any incoming student can opt-in to this housing community by selecting it as their first choice of housing on the New Student Housing Form.

Doubles and Triples

  • Currently double and triple open-gender housing is designated in Uhler (doubles/triples) or Prairie View (doubles) - depending on space available and number of applicants.
  • Residents opting in to open-gender housing should anticipate floors/areas designated as open gender to have residents of any/all genders, paired with the roommate of their own choosing, regardless of gender.

Thank you for your interest in the Crossroads Community in the Carlson International Center!

The Crossroads Program embodies the international focus within the Â鶹ÊÓƵ mission. Crossroads aspires to be a community of persons from diverse backgrounds who respect and affirm the dignity of all people. It brings together a population of international students; domestic students who have or will live or studied abroad; and students interested in language, culture and the study of the world. The Crossroads Program seeks to develop and promote international and intercultural understanding in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community. Program events and interactions develop an appreciation of ethnic, religious, and cultural differences and foster dialogue about how these differences shape individuals and communities.

Program Goals

  • To create a community of learners and educators committed to connecting to each other and campus community around the topic of international cultures, traditions, languages, and events in order to promote a broader global perspective;
  • To assist and challenge members of the Crossroads Program to understand their own level and stage of development as it relates to cultural difference, and grow as cultural persons;
  • As a program, provide educational opportunities and experiences for all members the College community through planning and implementing programs within Carlson International Center, in other residence halls, and in other campus facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When is Room Selection?
Room selection takes place in the Spring for the following Fall's placements. For Crossroads, the room selection process will be based on the scores assessed for the application essays. Before the day of the Crossroads room selection process begins, Residential Life will contact you with your selection order. This year, the room selection process will be in person, with the location being communicated closer to the selection date. If you are unable to attend yourself you may send a proxy to make the selection on your behalf.

Do I need to complete an application?
Yes! Any student interested in living in International Center must complete the application prior to the posted deadline during the Room Selection process each Spring. We are looking for students who are seeking to contribute to an intercultural living community and review each application to create a diverse community.

What if I already live in IC?
You must still complete the application. We review applications each spring for the upcoming academic year. Currently living in International Center does not guarantee your space for the following year.

What is the application like and how are they scored?
The application includes five essay questions to address an applicant's interest and experience with interacting with others. These essay responses will be reviewed without names attached to responses and scored based on the quality of their reflections, insight, and engagement with the prompts provided. The essay questions can be reviewed here. The scoring rubric can be reviewed here These essays are not only an opportunity to express your personal experiences and aspirations but also a way to demonstrate your potential to contribute to and thrive in the Crossroads community. Each response will be graded on a scale from 1 to 4, and your overall score will reflect the strength of your application.

Do I need to have a roommate?
You can apply with a roommate in mind, or as an individual. If you apply with someone: If you apply with a specific roommate in mind, both of you will be evaluated as a pair, and the quality of both applicants’ responses will influence your overall score for room selection. If you apply individually: Even if you apply by yourself, you will need to match up with someone else for the room selection process. There will be a time after the final deadline when we will hold an event for people to match with themselves. This is because living in Crossroads involves sharing space and building relationships with others from diverse backgrounds.

I was accepted but my friend missed the deadline. Can they live with me?
No. Individuals accepted without a roommate will have the opportunity to match in the housing portal with others accepted in order to find a roommate. All individuals wishing to be considered must complete an application and note their preferred roommates, who also must have applied.

I was not accepted, is there any chance I can still live in IC?
Those not accepted will be automatically added to the wait-list and contacted if a space becomes available. Wait-list activation will be based on original applications cores, and room types that become available. You will only receive an email if your wait-list request has been activated, at which time you can choose to accept or decline if you prefer instead to go through room selection or already have another housing assignment you would like to keep.

I'm thinking of applying to be a CF, can I be a CF in IC?
You can certainly apply both to be a Collegiate Fellow and to live in International Center, but the CFs for Crossroads are chosen through the CF selection process, not the Crossroads selection process. We try to have both selections completed before general room selection begins so applicants who are selected can decide if they want to accept.

Will I still be eligible for Room Selection after I select a room in International Center?
No, once you accept your space and select a room in International Center you will then be removed from any future Room Selection processes for the upcoming academic year.

Is there an additional cost to living in International Center?
Yes, there is a surcharge per person per semester for living in International Center. Housing rates are updated annually.

When do I have to make a final decision where I am living?
To be considered for the International Center, you must have submitted your application by the posted deadline. If accepted, you must decide prior to Crossroads room selection.

The Intentional Learning & Service (ILS) housing program is intended to create opportunities for students who wish to live, learn and act in a themed or project-oriented environment. The purpose and intent of the Intentional Learning & Service Houses is to align with the Â鶹ÊÓƵ core values (Excellence, Service, Justice, Community, Faith) to create meaningful opportunities for service to the college and/or the greater St. Peter community.

The five houses (Walker, Adolphson, Sjostrom, Peterson, and 10-0-9) are located on the east side of campus and are designated for occupancy by groups of 4-6 students.

ILS applications are due January 1. They will be reviewed and all applicants will be notified of their status by February 10. The application includes some short essays, if you would like to review the application prior to submission, you can view all questions .

Projects & Themes

It is imperative that the ILS Projects are actively engaged in the life of the College. Project and themes should connect to at least one of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Core Values. Whatever form the project takes, it must actively reach out to members of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community to educate or engage in meaningful activity.

To continue to support Â鶹ÊÓƵ's commitment to sustainability, each year at least one ILS project will have a sustainability focus.

About the Houses

These are furnished with a bed, dresser, desk, desk chair, and closet space for each resident. They also include living room furniture (soft seating and coffee table) and basic kitchen appliances (refrigerator, stove, and oven). They are considered Residential Housing and all College policies apply. Â鶹ÊÓƵ parking permit required for permitted spaces, City of Saint Peter permit required for street parking.

Off-Campus Housing

Â鶹ÊÓƵ is a fully residential institution. A very small number of students may be granted permission to live off-campus because of meeting one or more qualifiers in our residency policy.

The off-campus application deadline for 2026-2027 will be due January 1, 2026 via the application in the (available to those who have previously been approved based on meeting a qualifier). If you believe you meet one of the qualifiers but the application does not show up for you in the housing portal, email reslife [at] gustavus.edu (reslife[at]gustavus[dot]edu) with your circumstances.Ìý

Incoming students for Fall 2025 that meet a qualifier, please email reslife [at] gustavus.edu (reslife[at]gustavus[dot]edu) to request application access.

Those who do not meet one of the qualifiers for off-campus housing are applying only to be wait-listed. The wait list is only activated if all on-campus housing for the following academic year is filled by incoming and returning students, so off-campus applicants must participate in the full room selection process and find out over the summer if there is an option to be released for off-campus housing.ÌýSigning a lease is NOT a qualifier for off-campus housing. You will still receive a room assignment and be responsible for costs of both housing contracts - do not sign any lease agreements! The college is not obligated to grant permission to students who have entered into rental agreements before proper approval has been given.Ìý

If you live off campus, your Â鶹ÊÓƵ aid may be reduced. ÌýPlease meet with the Financial Aid office to discuss any impact this has on your financial aid.Ìý

Consideration for approval - Students granted off-campus residency must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • student who is married
  • student living with and responsible for dependent child/children
  • living in the Saint Peter area with their parents/guardian at time of matriculation (*within 15 miles from campus)
  • part-time (below 8 credits) for the ENTIRE academic year.
  • veterans of military service (having been deployed and/or providing DD214 paperwork); Those in ROTC, Reserves or basic training do not receive exemption. Residential Life follows the college's definition that is also used for FAFSA requirements - veterans include those who have completed active duty or have been deployed for reasons other than training
  • 23 years of age or older on/by the first day of class in September
  • home ownership (student name is sole name on mortgage)
  • student who is 21 years of age by the first day of fall semester class AND has not been enrolled full-time for more than one semester at any institution of higher education during the immediate past two years.
  • Master of Athletic Training Program 3+2 - student opting out of housing for 4th year at Â鶹ÊÓƵ (first year in the MAT) who has lived on campus for 3 years, applied (by November 15) and been accepted into the MAT program, and deposited by February 1. This will be confirmed by MAT program. Failure to be deposited or complete the form by the deadline will result in a student no longer being eligible for the 3+2 housing exception.
  • Master of Athletic Training Program 4+2 - Post-Baccalaureate Applicant entering the program for a 2-year masters degree.

Rising seniors who do not meet the above criteria may apply to be added to an off-campus wait list. The wait list will only be used if all on-campus housing is filled.Ìý

  • All those requesting off-campus housing should submit the off-campus housing application prior to the deadline.
  • To be considered for the wait list, complete an Off-Campus Housing Application in the online housing (by the posted deadline in the Spring).
  • Students wishing to live off-campus may list anticipated/desired roommates in the field in the off-campus application for reference, but groups are released based on their Fall on-campus housing groups/assignments, not desired roommates for off-campus.
    • So a group of four Seniors with a Fall assignment of a Southwest Apartment, who have all applied for off-campus housing, may be released if Residential Life has need of opening up an apartment in Southwest, for example. Otherwise all Room Selection ranking guidelines and processes are applicable to the selection process.
  • Wait list notifications: If the wait list is activated for off-campus releases, students will be notified by the Residential Life office via email, with a deadline for accepting or declining the offer to be released off campus. If this occurs it would be over the course of the summer, based on the need to make on-campus spaces available.

    Ìý

  • New/incoming students who meet a qualifier, please email reslife [at] gustavus.edu (reslife[at]gustavus[dot]edu )with more detailed information about which criteria you meet; we will make the off-campus application available upon request to those that qualify.
  • Students who do not qualify for off-campus housing based on the required qualifier(s) but are seeking accommodation due to a documented disability must go through the housing and dining accommodation process.
  • If you are enrolled FULL TIME in student teaching away from the immediate Saint Peter area or a for-credit internship outside of the immediate St. Peter area (e.g. no additional courses are being taken on campus during the semester), you may be eligible to live off-campus. Submit the online off-campus housing application for consideration.
